On the clear, cold evening of Friday 25th November 2016 at around 5pm more than a dozen Rotarians turned out to assist in the marshalling of this event. An enthusiastic crowd attended switch-on of the lights in St Peter’s Square in Emsworth by the Mayor of Havant, Rotarian and Havant Councillor Faith Ponsonby with her consort Michael Ponsonby.
Rotarians handed out song-sheets for the families who gathered to join in with the carol singing led by children from local schools, and there was a triumphal appearance of Santa’s Sleigh as the switch-on took place. The sleigh then processed down to the Quay, where Santa was called upon to switch on the lights on the Lobster Pot Tree on the Quay-side before he retired to his Grotto to greet the children who had queued patiently in the cold. Mulled wine and hot-dogs were available to keep us warm and fed. Havant Rotary Club supplied the fabulous sleigh as they do every year.
